Brent Spencer’s memoir, Rattlesnake Daddy: A Son’s Search for His Father (The Backwaters Press) was named a finalist for the New England Book Festival’s competition for best books of 2011. In a Boston ceremony this week, the book was named runner-up in its category (Autobiography/Biography). An account of Spencer’s efforts to come to terms with his father’s mysterious life and death, the book also won the Little Bluestem Award from The Backwaters Press and the Distinguished Artist Award from the Nebraska Arts Council. Excerpts from the book were published in the journals Witness and River Teeth. Brent Spencer, Ph.D., professor of English, is acting chair and directs the creative writing program.
