To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, Timothy Beal, Ph.D., will give a lecture titled, “From the King James Bible to Biblezines: The History of a Cultural Icon,” at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2, in the Harper Center, Ahmanson Ballroom. The lecture is free to the public.
Beal is the Florence Harkness Professor of Religion at Case Western Reserve University. He has published 12 books and many scholarly articles on the cultural history of the Bible, religion and popular culture, and relations between critical theory and academic religious studies. Two notable recent books include The Rise and Fall of the Bible: The Unexpected History of an Accidental Book (2011) and Biblical Literacy: Essential Bible Stories Everyone Needs to Know (2009).
The lecture is sponsored by the Creighton Kripke Center for the Study of Religion and Society.
