Creighton Students Living the Magis

Virtual Tutoring SCSJThe Schlegel Center for Service and Justice offered a committed weekly service program this semester called the 402 Service Program.  Creighton students who loved interacting with youth were invited to make a commitment to weekly service. The sites included  TeamMates Mentoring, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Lutheran Family Service’s Youth Exchange.

Participants in the 402 Service Program and CREW (Community. Reflection. Education. Weekly) for Social Justice partnered as mentors for elementary and high school age students, tutors for refugee high school students and worked with individuals who are incarcerated and preparing for re-entry. 97 students participated weekly all semester long in local community engagement programming with the SCSJ, serving & reflecting approximately 1,372 hours.

A 402 Service participant, who served with Lutheran Family Services says, “The 402 Service Program had a large effect on my understanding of our community. Before this semester, I have never delved into the topic of immigration and refugees. This program has introduced me to a group of people I never would have acknowledged otherwise. This program has helped me branch out and learn more about refugees and the immigration process around the world and in the US.”
