Science and Religion Talk

Science and Religion Talk

Thursday, April 24
7 p.m.
Hixson-Lied Science Building, Room 188

Presented by the Rev. Francis Xavier, SJ, visiting faculty at Creighton University, former vice president for academics and research for Jesuit Worldwide Learning in Geneva

Science and religion are often discussed as if they are non-compatible or contradictory. Fr Francis Xavier looks into the problem as complementary: While Science could answer the ‘how’ of life, Religion might answer the ‘why’ of life  – The former is based on rational thinking (based on observations), while the latter is acceptance in faith (based on revelation). Starting with a few day-to-day phenomena that may not be completely explained by scientific methods, he brings in other possibilities to understand such events. He takes up a couple of issues such as Creation-Evolution, Concept of Time, Life after Life etc to discuss the different perspectives of the same reality. Emergence of consciousness paves the way to interconnectedness of everything in reality.
