Williams to Lecture on Faith-Based Maternity Homes

Ogechukwu Williams, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of History, will give a lecture at the Critical Research on Africa series hosted by the University of Pittsburgh. Her lecture, “Medical Legitimacy: Childbirth, Authenticity, and Pluralism in Nigeria’s Faith-Based Birthing Homes,” explores the transformation of a 1920s faith healing movement from the informal realms of healing to a professional institution that provided faith-based obstetric care to underserved women. The work on which her presentation is based was supported by the CURAS Faculty Research Fellowship and the Kingfisher Fellowship.
