In Wheeling, W.Va., with the Appalachian Institute, students will be learning about wind power, mountaintop removal, efforts to protect water sources and local community development efforts. Special thanks to the Jesuit Community, Sodexho, Mark Simanek and Mike Willey, Creighton Medical Labs Marjel Whitmore, Ralph Ubillus-Pena and Dave Goodrich, Public Safety, University Ministry and Omar Valentine for all you have done to make connections, provide services and support the students. • Combat Colorectal Cancer Seminars

    • Colorectal cancer is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and women, and the second highest cause of cancer deaths in the United States. The good news is that, if caught early, it is highly curable. The best way to detect the disease, which offers no early warning signs, is through a colonoscopy, in which a tiny camera examines the colon for irregularities, including polyps, which can often be removed during the procedure. If you are 50 or older, you should have a colonoscopy. To find out more, Creighton Medical Associates is sponsoring two health seminars: one at noon on March 23 in Creighton's Skutt Student Center, room 104, and another on March 30 at 7 p.m. in the Morrison Seminar Room at Creighton University Medical Center. At both sessions, CMA's Bennie Upchurch, M.D., a gastrointestinal surgeon, will answer your questions. To schedule an appointment with Upchurch, call 402.449.4692. To register for the health seminar, call 402.280.5920.

  • Ignatian Notes

    • Ignatius was acutely aware from his own rather tempestuous past (he spent most of his first 30 years as a warring, romancing Spanish courtier) that every human heart has two contrary movements, one from good (the Holy Spirit) and the other from evil. He learned that to grow in union with God we must learn to recognize and respond only to the movements of good, the Holy Spirit, and distinguish—or discern—those from movements of evil. And since finding God in daily life was his goal, this discernment of good vs. evil must be applied to ordinary daily actions. So Ignatius suggested daily periods for examination of conscience focusing upon awareness of this inner motivation. – Richard J. Hauser, S.J.; Unity of Hearts and Minds, Creighton University Press, 2008
