Patient Safety Awareness Week - Patient Safety Event Reporting System
-
Did you know that the Creighton Center for Health Services Research and Patient Safety (CHRP) has a Patient Safety Event Reporting System? The much publicized Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, To Err is Human, established the need to improve patient safety. Safety improvement efforts have included empowering patients and health care providers to share their experiences with errors and near misses. Pharmacists and pharmacy services have been identified as key to the prevention strategies in reducing harm and injury from medication errors. In the Dyke Anderson – Pharmacists for Patient Safety Survey conducted by CHRP in cooperation with the Nebraska State Board of Pharmacy (results available at http://chrp.creighton.edu), Nebraska pharmacists reported experiencing errors and near misses in practice and a desire to engage in communication about safety concerns to improve patient safety. CHRP has developed a website for sharing safety issues, errors and near misses in pharmacy practice. Our intention is to reduce opportunities for harm and injury to patients by learning about errors and creating a dynamic communication network for best-practice solutions. We expect to generate reports about both common and newly emerging safety issues. We believe that reporting is only valuable if it leads to a constructive response. Feedback will come from an interdisciplinary team from across the Creighton University campus. If you would like to learn more about the CHRP Patient Safety Event Reporting System please contact Jennifer Faber (JenniferFaber@creighton.edu) or Kevin Fuji (kfuji@creighton.edu).

Ignatian Notes
-
So distinctive was Ignatius’ vision for the Society of Jesus in the sixteenth century that he initially had trouble getting approval from Catholic Church authorities—at one point approval was even withdrawn briefly. The then current approaches to spirituality focused more upon personal and liturgical prayer than upon actions. These spiritualities sought to develop contemplatives through prayer. Significantly, Ignatius never abandoned deep—or contemplative—union with God as the ultimate goal of his vision; he simply revised the means of achieving this union. To foster the realization of his vision of finding God in daily life Ignatius suggested appropriate spiritual practices or “exercises.” The heart of these practices are his Examination of Conscience and Rules for the Discernment of Spirits, found in his little retreat manual The Spiritual Exercises. – Richard J. Hauser, S.J.; Unity of Hearts and Minds, Creighton University Press, 2008

Combat Colorectal Cancer Seminars
-
Colorectal cancer is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and women, and the second highest cause of cancer deaths in the United States. The good news is that, if caught early, it is highly curable. The best way to detect the disease, which offers no early warning signs, is through a colonoscopy, in which a tiny camera examines the colon for irregularities, including polyps, which can often be removed during the procedure. If you are 50 or older, you should have a colonoscopy. To find out more, Creighton Medical Associates is sponsoring two health seminars: one at noon on March 23 in Creighton's Skutt Student Center, room 104, and another on March 30 at 7 p.m. in the Morrison Seminar Room at Creighton University Medical Center. At both sessions, CMA's Bennie Upchurch, M.D., a gastrointestinal surgeon, will answer your questions. To schedule an appointment with Upchurch, call 402.449.4692. To register for the health seminar, call 402.280.5920.

Cardoner

"Calling All Readers" invites you to a discussion with James Martin, S.J., via SKYPE (you will see and hear Fr. Martin present). “This Our Exile: A Spiritual Journey with the Refugees of East Africa,” will be discussed Tuesday, March 16, 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., Skutt Student Center, room 104. Seamlessly combining spiritual writing, reportage, travel narrative, humor and even some recent history, a young American Jesuit tells of his time working with the refugees of East Africa. His mission was straightforward: to help the refugees who had settled in the sprawling slums of Nairobi, Kenya, to start small businesses and earn a living. He imagined he would be teaching them much, and he did. But the refugees would end up teaching him much more about life, survival and faith, love and friendship. Fr. Martin is the culture editor of AMERICA Magazine. RSVP for the book, free if attending the discussion. RSVP also if you only want to hear and meet the author to Janine ter Kuile, Janine@creighton.edu.
