  • Cardoner

    • "Calling All Readers" invites you to a discussion with James Martin, S.J., via SKYPE (you will see and hear Fr. Martin present). “This Our Exile: A Spiritual Journey with the Refugees of East Africa,” will be discussed Tuesday, March 16, 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., Skutt Student Center, room 104. Seamlessly combining spiritual writing, reportage, travel narrative, humor and even some recent history, a young American Jesuit tells of his time working with the refugees of East Africa. His mission was straightforward: to help the refugees who had settled in the sprawling slums of Nairobi, Kenya, to start small businesses and earn a living. He imagined he would be teaching them much, and he did. But the refugees would end up teaching him much more about life, survival and faith, love and friendship. Fr. Martin is the culture editor of AMERICA Magazine. RSVP for the book, free if attending the discussion. RSVP also if you only want to hear and meet the author to Janine ter Kuile, Janine@creighton.edu.

Hired by Computers for Africa, an Omaha non-profit, he has single-handedly brought technology to a war-torn, desolated region of his country. Herbert will talk about beginning work in northern Uganda, an area he had never visited as it was considered a dangerous country within a country. RSVP for the lunch only to janine@creighton.edu.

  • Ignatian Notes

    • Ignatius was acutely aware from his own rather tempestuous past (he spent most of his first 30 years as a warring, romancing Spanish courtier) that every human heart has two contrary movements, one from good (the Holy Spirit) and the other from evil. He learned that to grow in union with God we must learn to recognize and respond only to the movements of good, the Holy Spirit, and distinguish—or discern—those from movements of evil. And since finding God in daily life was his goal, this discernment of good vs. evil must be applied to ordinary daily actions. So Ignatius suggested daily periods for examination of conscience focusing upon awareness of this inner motivation. – Richard J. Hauser, S.J.; Unity of Hearts and Minds, Creighton University Press, 2008
